| SUMMARY OF BUSES INVOLVED IN CRASHES |
| The 'Summary of Buses Involved in Crashes' report lists the total number of buses involved in fatal and non-fatal crashes for each state for the most recent three years. The list is in alphabetical order by state. This list may be resorted by the state with the highest number of buses involved in crashes in a single year by clicking on the underlined column headings, i.e., clicking on the column heading Fatal, 2006 will resort the list by the number of buses involved in fatal crashes in 2006. The data sources used for this report were FARS and MCMIS. |
| The FARS database includes all buses involved in fatal crashes. Bus types include school, cross country/inter-city and transit buses, and other/unknown bus types. |
| Definitions | |
| Bus - Any motor vehicle designed to transport more than eight people, including the driver. | |
| Fatal crash - A crash where one or more persons dies within 30 days of the crash. The fatality does not have to occur at the scene of the crash. It includes any person involved in the crash, including pedestrians and bicyclists, as well as occupants of the passenger cars, trucks, and buses. | |
| Non-fatal crash - A crash where one or more persons has non-fatal injuries requiring transportation by a vehicle for the purpose of obtaining immediate medical attention; or one or more of the vehicles were towed away from the scene due to "disabling damage". The towed vehicle need not be the truck or bus involved in the crash. |
