Frequently Asked SafeStat Questions |
Why are all crashes used regardless of fault? The SafeStat Accident Safety Evaluation Area (Accident SEA) considers a carrier's accident involvement, regardless of responsibility or fault. State-reported crash data and data collected from Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) compliance reviews are used to calculate two indicators of relative crash involvement. However, neither source has information regarding fault. The SafeStat algorithm, by design, ranks carriers in comparison to other carriers. All carriers are treated the same way - "an accident is an accident." In the case of the Accident SEA value the carrier's crash rates are being compared to other carriers' crash rates regardless of fault or preventability of individual crashes. Therefore, there is no relative disadvantage to any particular carrier. To eliminate misinterpretation, a caveat is placed wherever SafeStat accident-related values are shown. The caveat states, "* The Accident SEA value represents carrier accident involvement only and is not intended as a means to assess fault." When an involvement indicator (and therefore the Accident SEA) is relatively high, it suggests that a further examination of causes is needed, and if correctable, action should be taken by the motor carrier. SafeStat calculations are applied uniformly to all carriers and are adjusted for exposure. For a more detailed explanation of the calculation of the Accident SEA and its components, the Accident Involvement Indicator (AII) and the Recordable Accident Indicator (RAI), please refer to the SafeStat Methodology document.

How is SAFER different than SafeStat? The internet site Safety and Fitness Electronic Records System (SAFER), http://safer.fmcsa.dot.gov/, provides the most current carrier profile information. This website is updated weekly. The SafeStat module, by design, is meant to provide users with SafeStat results and an understanding of the data that was used to calculate those results. SafeStat is run monthly. When SafeStat is run the A&I Online site is updated with the SafeStat results and a snapshot of the data (Motor Carrier Management Information System (MCMIS) data) that was used to calculate those SafeStat results. The SafeStat module includes detail level data on roadside inspections, crashes, compliance reviews, and enforcements. The A&I Online site is meant to supplement the information and data available on other sites such as the SAFER site. |
When will SafeStat Online be updated?SafeStat is run every month. The SafeStat results and a snapshot of the data (Motor Carrier Management Information System (MCMIS) data) that was used to calculate those SafeStat results are posted online monthly. |
Why doesn't the A&I site reflect the information I recently submitted on the MCS-150 form? The A&I site is updated with a snapshot of data from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) central database every time there is a SafeStat run (monthly). The SafeStat module, by design, is meant to provide users with SafeStat results and an understanding of the data that was used to calculate those results. When SafeStat is run the A&I site is updated with the SafeStat results and a snapshot of the data (Motor Carrier Management Information System (MCMIS) data) that was used to calculate those SafeStat results. The A&I site is meant to supplement the information and data available on other sites. Information that was submitted on MCS-150 forms to FMCSA will be reflected in the next SafeStat run results. The Internet site Safety and Fitness Electronic Records System (SAFER), http://safer.fmcsa.dot.gov/, provides the most current carrier profile information. This website is updated weekly with the information received on MCS-150 forms. |
