2.1 Standard Navigation Techniques Implemented
2.2 Navigating through A&I Online Modules

2.1 Standard navigation techniques implemented

A&I Online implements standard navigation techniques to help make getting the information you need intuitive. Some of the standard techniques employed on the A&I Online web site include: buttons, underlined text, graphics, navigation bar, and a site map.

2.1.1 Buttons

Clicking on buttons displays a new web page or displays more information on the same page. Some of the buttons on the site include:

  • Main Menu buttons are linked to the five main modules.

A&I Main Menu on the home page provides access to all of the modules within A&I (SafeStat Online, Crash Profiles Online, Program Measures, Current Analysis Results, and A&I Contacts

    • Banner buttons navigate within each of the modules.

Banner Buttons located on the top of nearly every page, help one to navigate at top level links throughout the site and module specific links.

    • Drill down buttons on the SafeStat results tables access (drill-down) more detail data.

Drill Down Buttons - Other links on the pages throughout the module drill down to further data when necessary.

    • Crash Profile report buttons access reports in the different focus areas within Crash Profiles.

Crash Profile Reports, Report buttons access the Crash Profile reports.

2.1.2 Underlined text

Clicking on underlined text displays a new web page. A&I uses underlined text in the following areas:

  • Underlined text on the header of the textual descriptions for each of the main menu options is an alternative way to access the module.

Underlined Headers provide alternative ways to navigate on some of the higher level pages in throughout the site. Shown in the example is the entry page to SafeStat.

  • Underlined text on the header of the textual descriptions for each of the module’s banner options is an alternative way to access the areas within each module.
  • Underlined text on the SafeStat labels of tables is a link to additional information. This method is employed in SafeStat to link to a specific section or the SafeStat methodology to understand how a specific value was calculated.*

Underlined SafeStat Labels, in some places serve to give more information from the SafeStat Methodology wiht regards to the data being presented.

*Exception is when underlined text is used as column headings in SafeStat. The underlined text does not access additional information but re-sorts the table by the column heading selected.

  • Underlined text in two of the Crash Profile Reports is linked to the SafeStat Online module. In the Crash Profile report example shown, Carriers with the Most Crashes in the Profile State, the carrier’s DOT number is underlined and provides a link to the carrier’s SafeStat results in the SafeStat Online module.

Underlined text in Crash Profiles. The example shows how on one of the reports the carrier DOT number is linked to the SafeStat report.

2.1.3 Graphics

Graphics are used to link to different parts of the site. Graphics are used on the A&I Online site very selectively to provide the user with more detailed information and to provide the site with an identity. Examples include:

  • The A&I logo is at the footer of every web page on the site. The logo is linked to the home (main menu) page. Users can click on the logo to access the main menu as an alternative to clicking on the Home button.

A& I Logo, Located on the bottom of most pages, links to Home Page of A&I.

    • On the SafeStat Carrier Detail Results Overview web page, the SafeStat graphic shows how a SafeStat Score is calculated. Each SEA Value graphic is linked to its own web page with detailed SafeStat results.  This method of navigation is an alternative to clicking on specific SEA value buttons on the banner.

SafeStat graphic areas link to explinations of the SafeStat calculation in the methodology as appropriate.

2.1.4 Navigation Bar

The navigation bar is at the top of every web page and allows the user to navigate to different parts of the site. The navigation bar offers a consistent place to go to return to the main menu page, send feedback, view the site map, view what is new on the site, or look at the siteguide.

Top Navigation Bar, links users to Home, Feedback, Site Map, What's New, User Guide, Contacts, and Related Links

2.1.5 Site Map

The site map provides a table of contents of the site, and it can be accessed from every web page. Many of the options listed on the site map are linked to the related web page.
